Farrow, a resident of Ballston Spa, is a Reiki Master and founder of a practice she calls Your Sacred Roots. And as part of her job, she touches people as a way of imparting what she terms “healing energy.”
Reiki, according to Merriam-Webster, is “a system of touching with the hands based on the belief that such touching by an experienced practitioner produces beneficial effects by strengthening and normalizing certain vital energy fields held to exist within the body.”
Reiki practitioners say that energy can stagnate in parts of the body where there has been trauma. Over time, these obstructions can cause illness. Farrow, 33, “clears out energy blockages” in people’s bodies and is well-versed in all kinds of healing, whether physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual.
“In a Reiki treatment, the client lays down on the massage table, and as I walk around them, I place my hands on or above different parts of the body,” she said in a recent interview. “The Reiki energy flows through me and into the client, clearing out negative energies.”
Her sessions, she said, generally last about an hour, “depending on the energetic needs of the client. If someone has had a lot of trauma—physical, emotional, or mental—their needs are going to be a little bit more than someone who has been a bit luckier in life.”
In a recent session, Farrow said, “I had my hand on someone’s kidney area, and I got a slight pain up my arm – which told me to pay extra attention to it because it has an energy blockage.” With another client, “When I went near her knee, my entire arm began vibrating, and after the session, she told me that she’s had issues with it—that she had an injury to it which needed surgery.
“I am a channel for the energy to flow – it actually helps me too. I get a little Reiki treatment myself. My energy blockages need to be clear in order for the Reiki’s energy to make its way to the client. It feels good to give Reiki, especially when my own body has a reaction to it. It’s confirmation that I am helping these people.”
In general, a typical session is “very relaxing,” Farrow said. “Oftentimes, my clients will fall right asleep on the table!”
In some cases, clients can have an “emotional release,” Farrow said. “When a session ends, someone may wake up crying, which is perfectly OK and normal. That’s just one of the ways the body has to release negative energy.”
Farrow has completed the three levels of training: Shoden, Okuden, and Shinpiden, making her a Reiki master. She will also be completing an additional level of Shinpiden in August. She is not a doctor, and she emphasizes that it is important that clients see a licensed physician to diagnose an ailment or adverse condition. She does not diagnose or treat. Reiki, she said, complements and aids primary treatment methods. She doesn’t currently have a physical space in which to work, so she can see clients at her husband’s gym in Clifton Park.
